Program Overview


Introduction to Chinese Studies

The Chinese Studies academic programme focuses on both traditional and contemporary aspects of China, including its role in the world and the exchange processes that link China's history and present-day existence to other regions.


Program Structure

The program offers two main options:


  • East Asian studies with a focus on Chinese studies (25%): This option cannot be combined with a bachelor's degree in East Asian studies with a focus on Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, or East Asian Art History.
    • Option A Language Focus: With a focus on language skills for Chinese Studies, this option is not intended for Chinese native speakers.
    • Option B Thematic Focus: With a focus on themes from Chinese Studies (e.g., history, politics, economics, culture).
  • Chinese studies as a minor (25%): This degree programme may only be taken in conjunction with a major in the Bachelor’s degree programme (75%) in East Asian Studies with a focus on Japanese studies or East Asian Art History.
    • Option A Language Focus: Language Courses: Basic levels I and II, not intended for Chinese native speakers.
    • Option B Language & Thematic Focus: Language Courses: Basic level I and thematic courses.
    • Option C Language & Thematic Focus: Language Courses: Intermediate level and thematic courses, only available for students pursuing a major in East Asian Art History with a regional focus on China.

Course Content

The minor in Chinese Studies focuses on a cultural examination of Chinese society, including its historical development, present-day form, and regional interrelationships. Students will learn the Chinese language and acquire specific knowledge about the country and its regions, as well as develop the ability to independently resolve relevant research questions.

Pre-Semester Course

A mandatory 40-hour pre-semester course for all new students in Chinese studies starts 2 weeks before the lecture period of the winter semester. Participation in the course is required before taking up studies.
