The degree programme in Christianity and Culture focuses on the origin and current state of Christianity as a cultural phenomenon. This programme covers theoretical and empirically-founded aspects of the subject, offering students the opportunity to develop a specialism of their choice.

Course Content

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Christianity and Culture with a weighting of 50% offers students a specialist theological degree, with a specialism in a field of their choice (Old Testament, New Testament, church history, systematic theology, religious studies, and practical theology), and up to two neighbouring subjects. The degree course prepares students to enter the job market. Graduates are able to solve problems independently and have gained the methodical and practical skills required to successfully enter employment.

Depending on students’ chosen area of specialism, they may be required to demonstrate knowledge of a source language.

• If the Old Testament is chosen as a specialism, students must demonstrate knowledge of Hebrew.
• A specialism in the New Testament requires that students have knowledge of Greek.
• Specialisation in church history requires knowledge of Latin or Greek.
• Specialisation in systematic and practical theology requires that students demonstrate knowledge of one of the aforementioned languages of their choice.
• Where students specialise in religious studies/intercultural theology, they must demonstrate knowledge of one of the aforementioned old languages or a non-European source language. Students have the opportunity to fulfil language requirements during the Bachelor’s degree programme.

Course Structure

The standard period of study is six semesters, including the final Bachelor's examination. If students need to refresh their knowledge of a language, they may be required to complete an additional semester of study. Christianity and Culture is studied as a major subject (50% weighting) alongside a second major subject (50% weighting). Students may select any subject as a second major subject which has an interdisciplinary connection with the Bachelor’s degree programme in Christianity and Culture.

There is an introductory phase at the beginning of the degree programme. Students have the opportunity to refresh their knowledge of any of the old languages they require for their chosen specialism (Latin, Greek, or Hebrew) and gain initial understanding of bible study. The degree programme subsequently focuses on the student’s chosen area of specialism and related subjects. It is recommended that students spend a period of time abroad, which can be taken as part of an elective module. During the degree programme, students also gain generic skills which will be of use when they enter employment (“cross-disciplinary skills”). If students select Christianity and Culture as their first major subject, they must complete a Bachelor’s thesis in the sixth semester.
