Introduction to the East Asian Studies Program
The objective of the Bachelor’s degree programme in East Asian Studies is the cultural exploration of East Asian societies, including their historical development, modern manifestations, and regional interrelationships.
Pre-Semester Course for New Students
A mandatory 40-hour pre-semester course for all new students in Chinese studies (in the B.A. East Asian studies) or participation in the Chinese studies language preparatory course always starts 2 weeks before the lecture period of the winter semester. Participation in the course is required before you can take up your studies.

Course Content
The Bachelor’s degree programme East Asian studies uses interdisciplinary approaches to convey specific knowledge and vocational skills, including cultural competence, and familiarises students with new media. The aim of the degree programme is to create a practical connection between linguistic and cultural competencies. The subject can also be studied in the teaching degree option which qualifies students to enrol in the subsequent programme culminating in a Master of Education. The course consists of a general East Asian studies component, a language component, a specific component that focuses on China, Korea, Japan or East Asian art history, a supplementary subject and an additional component in which students acquire general and vocational qualifications.
Course Structure
The academic programme consists of a core component and a supplementary component.
- The core component includes East Asian studies and is divided into three sub-components:
- Language competence (Chinese, Korean or Japanese)
- Regionally specific competencies (Chinese studies, Japanese studies, Korean studies or East Asian art history)
- Subject-specific competence
- The supplementary components consist of:
- the scientific minor subject (disciplinary competence)
- acquisition of generic and vocational qualifications (cross-disciplinary skills)
- practical vocational activity A study period abroad in the selected language area is strongly recommended.
Qualification Options
The polyvalent Bachelor's degree opens up two qualification options: the academic training can serve as the basis for the Master of Education in the Lehramt Gymnasium profile if the career goal is to become a teacher. At the same time, the polyvalent Bachelor can be the basis for a Master of Arts or Master of Science. This study decision can be made during the Bachelor's degree programme.
