The Eastern European and East-Central European Studies program is an interdisciplinary approach to examining the culture and history of the Slavic countries. Students will be taught a combination of solid language training and fundamental knowledge and skills in the areas of language, literature, history, and cultural studies.

Course Content

The degree program combines language training with fundamental knowledge and skills in language, literature, history, and cultural studies. Students will participate in an interdisciplinary examination of the interrelationships between languages, literature, culture, and history of Eastern and East-Central Europe. The program provides in-depth knowledge of two Slavic languages and an overview of the Slavic countries in their historical and cultural development.

Course Structure

The degree program is dual in nature, consisting of theoretical modules (history and cultural studies) and language acquisition modules. These are complemented by modules for cross-disciplinary competencies. Theoretical modules include courses that provide an introduction to the fundamentals and methodology of History, Cultural Studies, Literature, and Linguistics. Language acquisition modules provide intensive instruction in Russian and a second language offered at the Institute of Slavic Studies.

Specialization and Thesis

In the third year of studies, students have the opportunity to focus on a specialization within an advanced module. During this time, the Bachelor’s thesis will also be completed.
