Course Content
The Master’s degree programme in English Studies requires a specialisation either in Literary Studies or in Linguistics from the first semester onward. It is intended for applicants who have received academic instruction during their undergraduate education in their desired field of study. In both its areas, the programme emphasises scholarly approaches and expects students to be familiar with conducting research, various methodologies, and with the writing of academic papers. Although there is a clear specialisation, the MA in English Studies also encourages interdisciplinary methods and relies on new cultural and instructional techniques. An extensive and varied course programme, independent research modules, and a yearly Graduate Student Conference provide students with the opportunity to develop a unique profile, equipping them both for post-graduate programmes and for various careers in the private sector.
Admission requirement is the proof of English language skills at C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, proven e.g. by a corresponding certificate or a relevant Bachelor's degree. The course requires the choice of a minor subject; either in the complementary field to the specialisation in English Studies, or in a different subject.
Course Structure
Over the course of the first three semesters, students complete four seminars, four lectures and two research-oriented independent studies projects, supervised by professors. Within these curricular restraints, students can still individually plan their learning content and focus on their needs and interests. Students are required to complete their Master's thesis and prepare for the final oral examination in the fourth semester. A yearly Graduate Student Conference allows for opportunities.
