In lectures and excursions, students will expand their knowledge of art works from a wide variety of epochs and art genres and will develop the conceptual tools necessary to a more in-depth description, categorisation, and interpretation of these objects. During the course of the degree programme, students will learn a variety of methods for analysing art works with regard to their origin, characteristics, function, and effect as well as their material and conceptual prerequisites. Students will thereby develop the ability to independently approach research questions from the area of European Art History in accordance with scientific methodology.

It is mandatory to choose a minor in combination with this Master programme. For further information please refer to the Examination Rules and Regulations.

During the first three semesters, students will attend advanced seminars and lectures on the topic of European Art History. In addition, participation in the Methodology seminar is mandatory and must be completed within one of the first two semesters. Students are also required to take part in eight excursion days with a minimum of four consecutive days.

In the Supplementary Module, students may round out their educational profile with three courses of their own choosing. These may include additional seminars and practice classes in Art History as well as courses in a different subject. This may also include an internship. In addition, there is an opportunity to study abroad for a semester. The Master’s thesis will be written during the final semester.
