Course Content

The degree program entails the analysis of literary, linguistic, and cultural phenomena that have arisen as a result of contact across territorial, ethnic, political, and religious boundaries within the francophone linguistic and cultural area. The program focuses on variants of French language and culture, as well as literary traditions, considering the entirety of the world’s francophone territories.

Admission Requirements

To embark on the Master’s degree program, students must have successfully completed a Bachelor’s degree in a philological or cultural subject. During the degree program, students will strengthen their French language proficiency and gain language skills in an additional Romance language.

Course Structure

During the first three semesters, students develop their knowledge and skills in relation to French language, francophone literature, and cultural studies. From the third academic semester, which is spent abroad at a partner university, students can individually weight their studies in these three different areas. Alternatively, students may spend the third academic semester completing a work placement relevant to the content of the degree program or reflecting elements of academia.

International Variant

The Master’s degree program in French/Transcultural Studies can also be studied as an international variant. The International Double Degree Variant is offered in cooperation with Paul Valéry University of Montpellier (UPVM). The first year of study is typically spent at the student’s home university, with the second year spent at the partner university. The following areas of specialization can be selected at UPVM:

  • “Francophonie Interculturalité” (Francophone interculturality, Master’s in Cultural Studies)
  • “Sociolinguistique et politiques linguistiques éducatives” (Sociolinguistics and language education policies, Master’s in Language Sciences)
  • “Analyse des discours médiatiques, institutionnels et politiques” (Analysis of media, institutional, and political discourses, Master’s in Language Sciences) The double degree variant covers French and German perspectives on language and culture contact, as well as issues of transculturality in the francophone world.
