The Faculty of Philosophy offers a Bachelor's degree program in Near Eastern Archaeology, focusing on the settlement and cultural history of the Ancient Near East. Course Content

The 50%-option of the Bachelor’s degree program in Near Eastern archaeology provides students with general knowledge of ancient Near Eastern cultures and associated questions of archaeological practice. Students acquire specific knowledge of:


  • Near Eastern settlement archaeology
  • Social and economic developments
  • Technologies and techniques
  • Production and craft
  • Profane and religious architecture
  • Art and artisan craft Students learn the basics of analysis and documentation of archaeological find material and ground monuments, enabling them to analyze and assess objects and excavation sites in terms of dating, development, and function, as well as their political and social importance.

Course Structure

The Bachelor’s program at 50% includes the Near Eastern archaeology major and must be supplemented by a further major subject. The degree program is a modular program, consisting of:


  • Two introductory modules providing a systematic overview of the cultural-historical processes of ancient history and the historical periods of the ancient Near East
  • A basic module focusing on specific questions related to the cultures and periods of the ancient Near East, as well as source analysis
  • A module on archaeological practices, introducing excavation work, archaeological documentation, and the basics of surveying
  • A specialized module concentrating on research approaches, methods, and theories used in Near Eastern archaeology
  • An interdisciplinary module providing insights into the topics of neighboring subjects, as well as social and natural sciences
