The MSc Applied Physics program at Delft University of Technology offers a track in Physics for Instrumentation, focusing on designing new cutting-edge instruments and sensor technologies.
Track Description
Physics for Instrumentation focuses on developing advanced detectors for research in cosmology and particle physics, as well as machines for medical therapy and chip fabrication.
Course Modules
The program includes elective modules related to this track, such as:
- Advanced Optical Imaging
- Advanced Photonics
- Quantum Optics
- Nanotechnology
- Optics for Lithography
- Submm and Terahertz Physics and Applications
- Terahertz Superconducting Astronomical Instrumentation
- Neutrons, X-Rays and Positrons for Studying Microscopic Structures and Dynamics
- Elementary Particles
- Introduction to Charged Particle Optics Additionally, the program includes mandatory mathematics and ethics modules, as well as a choice of general advanced physics modules.
Thesis Project
Students will carry out their Master’s thesis project in one of the following departments:
- Imaging Physics (life-sciences to high-tech industries)
- Quantum Nanoscience (sensing technology for space telescopes)
- Radiation Science and Technology (advanced detectors for particle physics research at Nikhef and CERN)
- Experimental astronomy group
- Dynamics of Micro and Nanosystems section
- Control of imaging systems at Delft Center for Systems and Control
Additional Options
Students following the Physics for Instrumentation track with a focus on photonics have the opportunity to take the MasterPlus Optics & Photonics special program, supported by the 4TU, PhotonDelta, and many industrial partners via OpticsNetherlands.
