Program Overview


Master of Arts in the Field of Speech-Language Pathology

The Master of Arts in the Field of Speech-Language Pathology is a graduate program offered by the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences at The George Washington University. This program is fully accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).


Overview

As part of GW’s nationally ranked speech-language pathology graduate program, students receive in-depth education on all aspects of communication and hands-on experience evaluating patients and administering therapy treatments. The program provides full insight into communication, including the consequences and rehabilitation of communication disorders for individuals and society.


Admissions

  • Admission deadlines: Admission is offered on a rolling basis. Applications are reviewed beginning in January. Applicants seeking funding are strongly encouraged to submit their completed applications no later than April 1.
  • Standardized test scores: GRE General test recommended but not required (institutional code 5246).
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the PTE Academic is required of all applicants except those who hold a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a college or university in the United States or from an institution located in a country in which English is the official language, provided English was the language of instruction.
  • Recommendations required: Two (2) recommendations.
  • Prior academic records: Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript.
  • Prerequisite requirements: A bachelor's degree with a major in speech and hearing science or its equivalent.
  • Statement of purpose: In an essay of 250 – 500 words, state your purpose in undertaking graduate study in your chosen field. Include your academic objectives, research interests, and career plans.
  • Additional Requirements: Resume/CV and course summary sheet.

Requirements

The master of arts in the field of speech-language pathology degree program is for students with an undergraduate degree in speech-language pathology. The following requirements must be fulfilled:


  • The general requirements stated under Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, Graduate Programs.
  • Thesis option—42 credits, including 33 credits in required courses, 5 credits in clinical practica courses, and 4 credits in thesis coursework.
  • Non-thesis option—42 credits, including 33 credits in required courses, 5 credits in clinical practica courses, and 4 credits in elective courses.
  • In addition, all students must successfully complete supervised practica and a master's summative assessment.
