Program Overview
The University of Sheffield offers a comprehensive Civil and Structural Engineering MEng program, designed to equip students with advanced technical and multidisciplinary design skills in the principles behind civil and structural engineering.
Course Description
The program focuses on the core disciplines of structures, water engineering, and geotechnics, with the second half of the course emphasizing more specialized and advanced structural engineering modules. Students will engage in project-based learning, working on real-world built-environment problems to address complex challenges of engineering a low-carbon future.
Modules
The course structure includes:
- First year: Core modules such as Structural Mechanics, Mathematics and Python Programming, Hydraulic Principles and Flow in Pipes, Strength of Materials and Structures, Design Project 1: Make and Break, and Design Project 2: Sustainable Buildings.
- Second year: Example core modules include Geotechnical Engineering, Mathematics and Applications, Structural Analysis, Water Engineering, and Design Projects.
- Third year: Example core modules include Advanced Structural Design and Appraisal, Environmental Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, and Research Project.
- Fourth year: In addition to core modules, students have a wide selection of specialist optional modules, depending on their chosen specialism.
Learning and Assessment
The program employs various learning and teaching methods, including lectures, tutorials, practical activities, design classes, coursework assignments, and individual investigative projects. Assessment is based on a mix of examinations, coursework assignments, online tests, reports, group projects, presentations, design work, and dissertations.
Entry Requirements
The standard offer for this course is AAA at A Level, including Maths, with alternative offers for students with different qualifications. English language requirements include GCSE English Language at grade 4/C or an equivalent qualification.

Fees and Funding
