Program Overview
Computer Science MComp
The University of Sheffield offers a four-year MComp degree in Computer Science, which is an extension of the BSc degree, allowing for further specialisation. Students can choose to develop their research skills by working alongside academics and researchers on projects or join the student-led software organisation, Genesys, to work on solutions for clients.
Course Description
The course provides a comprehensive education in computer science, covering core concepts, programming languages, software engineering, and research-led teaching. Students will have access to the latest hardware, software, and operating systems in dedicated computer labs. The course is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) and fully meets the requirements for Chartered Information Technology Professional (CITP) and Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Modules
The course structure includes:
- First year: Core modules such as Introduction to Software Engineering, Foundations of Computer Science, Java Programming, Practical Algorithms and Data Structures, Systems and Networks, and Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and First Year Reflection.
- Second year: Core modules including Programming Language Principles, Cybersecurity in Action and Professional Issues, Databases and Logic in Computer Science, Software Hut, Automata, Computation and Complexity, and Foundations and Applications of Artificial Intelligence.
- Third year: A core module, Dissertation Project, and optional modules.
- Fourth year: Core modules, including the Turing Research Project and Parallel Computing with Graphical Processing Units (GPUs), and optional modules.
Learning and Assessment
Learning will be delivered through a combination of lectures, practical sessions, tutorials, and seminars. Assessment will be through a mixture of exams/tests, coursework, and practical sessions.
Entry Requirements
The standard offer for this course includes:
- A Levels: A*AA; AAA, including Maths; AAA, including Maths and Computer Science.
- International Baccalaureate: 38, with 6 in Higher Level Maths; 36, with 6 in Higher Level Maths and Computer Science.
- BTEC Extended Diploma: D*DD in Engineering, Applied Science, IT, or Computing, plus A in A Level Maths.
- Other qualifications, such as Access to HE Diploma, are also considered.
