Program Overview

Computer Systems Engineering BEng

The University of Sheffield offers a BEng in Computer Systems Engineering, a course that combines mathematics, control, embedded systems, and programming to equip students with the knowledge and skills to design optimized hardware and software for computing, sensing, IoT, AI, telecoms, and autonomous systems.

Course Description

This course sits at the heart of technologies transforming society, from AI, autonomous vehicles, and robotics to IoT and next-generation communications. Students will be equipped to make a positive contribution to global challenges such as sustainable mobility, cybersecurity, and advanced computing. The course is designed with input from industry and informed by world-leading research, providing a strong foundation in electronics, computing, and complex electro-mechanical systems, while developing hands-on expertise in programming, circuit design, and intelligent systems engineering.

Modules

The course structure includes:

  • First year: Core modules such as Group Project and Engineering Skills, Engineering system modelling and analysis, Analysis tools for mechatronics, computer engineering and AI, Electric and Magnetic Circuits, and Analogue and Digital Electronics.
  • Second year: Modules include Design Project, Control, communications and mathematics, Embedded System Engineering, Analogue devices and circuits, and Software and Hardware Design.
  • Third year: Students undertake a substantial practical project and choose a specialist pathway aligned with their interests, such as microelectronics or software and AI.

Learning and Assessment

Students learn through a combination of lectures, practical labs, and tutorials, as well as independent study. Assessment is by a combination of exams and tests, coursework, and practical work. The teaching is based on a systematic and structured approach to support learning, with laboratory and professional skills strongly integrated within the taught modules.

Entry Requirements

The standard offer for this course includes A Levels at AAB, including Maths and a science, or equivalent qualifications such as International Baccalaureate, BTEC Extended Diploma, or Access to HE Diploma in a relevant subject. English language requirements include GCSE English Language at grade 4/C or an equivalent acceptable English language qualification.

Graduate Careers

Graduates from the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering are highly employable and work all over the world for companies such as Arup, Rolls-Royce, Boeing, Jaguar Land Rover, Thales, and IBM. They go on to become professional engineers in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, power generation, and sustainable energy.

Fees and Funding

Tuition fees for home students are £9,535 per year, and for overseas students, £30,570 per year. The university offers scholarships, bursaries, and funding opportunities, including a £2,500 per year scholarship for international students.

Placements and Study Abroad

Students may have the opportunity to add an optional placement year as part of their course, converting the three-year course to a four-year Degree with Placement Year. Spending time abroad during the degree is also possible, with over 250 university partners worldwide.

University Rankings

The University of Sheffield is a world top-100 university, ranked 92nd in the QS World University Rankings 2026. It is also the number one university in the Russell Group for organisation and management, according to the National Student Survey 2024. The university has a strong research excellence framework, with 92% of its research rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.

Student Profiles

Students who have taken the course have gone on to work as technology interns for companies like Automation Consultants during their placement year, gaining valuable experience and skills in the field.

Department

The School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is home to the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre and has research contracts with major institutions like the European Space Agency. The school's facilities include a robotics and automation lab, a control and power systems laboratory, and a state-of-the-art electronics and control lab in The Diamond.

Extra Information

The course is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Institute of Measurement and Control, and the Engineering Council UK. The university's student protection plan and terms and conditions upon acceptance of an offer are available on the university's website.
