Program Overview


Materials Science and Engineering with a Foundation Year BEng MEng

The University of Sheffield offers a Materials Science and Engineering with a Foundation Year BEng MEng program. This course is designed for students who do not have the usual scientific or mathematical background for an engineering degree. After successfully completing the foundation year, which includes modules in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, students can start the BEng or MEng degree.


Course Description

The course covers the principles of materials science and engineering, including the application of materials in commercial products. Students will explore the use of different materials, links with industry, and practical training. The program also focuses on specialist teaching facilities, including The Diamond, which is dedicated to engineering.


Modules

The foundation year includes core modules such as Advanced Level Chemistry, Introduction to Engineering, and optional modules like Elements of Physics with Computing or Elements of Physics. After completing the foundation year, students can start their BEng or MEng degree, which includes a range of modules, including materials properties, materials sustainability, and computational modeling techniques.


Learning and Assessment

Students will learn through lectures, labs, tutorials, and problem classes, with a focus on practical learning and industry-relevant skills. Assessment will be through a combination of exams, tests, coursework, and practical work.


Entry Requirements

The standard offer for this course is BBB; BBC at A Level, with specific requirements for international students, including 32; 31, with Maths and at least one of Physics, Chemistry, or Biology at Higher Level 5 or Standard Level 7 for International Baccalaureate students.
