Program Overview

Mathematics and Statistics BSc

The University of Sheffield offers a BSc Mathematics and Statistics course, accredited by the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) for the purpose of eligibility for Graduate Statistician status. This three-year course provides students with advanced problem-solving skills and statistical knowledge, preparing them for a successful career.

Course Description

The course covers topics across mathematics and statistics, including calculus, algebra, modelling, and data science. Students will develop programming skills using Python and R, and learn to present their work as professional mathematicians using LaTeX. The course is designed to give students a deep understanding of statistical tools and techniques, and to prepare them for a career in fields such as finance, technology, and big data.

Modules

The course consists of a range of modules, including:

  • Introduction to University Mathematics
  • Geometry, Matrices and Multivariate Calculus
  • Foundations of Pure Mathematics
  • Probability and Data Science
  • Mathematical Investigation Skills
  • Mathematical modelling

In the second year, students will continue to build their fundamental knowledge of mathematics and statistics, applying it to increasingly complex problems. Example core modules include:

  • Linear Algebra and Advanced Calculus
  • Analysis
  • Statistical Inference and Modelling
  • Stochastic Modelling

In the third year, students will continue to explore key topics from mathematics and statistics, and undertake a statistical project. Example core modules include:

  • Bayesian Statistics and Generalised Linear Models
  • Medical Statistics and Sampling Theory
  • Mathematics and Statistics Project and Skills

Learning and Assessment

Students will learn through lectures, small group tutorials and problems classes, programming classes, and research projects. Assessment will be in a variety of ways, depending on the modules taken, including quizzes, examinations, presentations, participation in tutorials, projects, coursework, and other written work.

Entry Requirements

The standard offer for this course is AAB at A Level, including A in Maths. Alternative qualifications, such as International Baccalaureate, BTEC Extended Diploma, and Access to HE Diploma, are also accepted. English language requirements include GCSE English Language at grade 4/C, or an IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.
