Program Overview

Pharmacy MPharm

The University of Sheffield offers a four-year MPharm program in Pharmacy, designed to equip students with the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional attributes necessary to qualify as a pharmacist and support patients across various settings.

Course Description

The program focuses on developing students' understanding of pharmacy practice, including the science behind pharmacy, patient care, and professional skills. Students will learn from experienced pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, as well as from patients through the Patients as Educators program.

Modules

The program consists of four years of study, with modules covering topics such as:

• The Patient and Society
• Science of Pharmacy
• Evidence-Based Treatment of Diseases 1 and 2
• Evidence-Based Treatment of Diseases 3 and 4
• Improving Quality in Practice
• Advanced Pharmaceutical Practice and Preparing for Prescribing

Learning and Assessment

The program uses a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, workshops, project work, laboratory work, simulation teaching sessions, clinical placements, and external visits to pharmacy service providers. Assessments include traditional exams, open-book exams, group and individual project work, peer assessment, laboratory and professional portfolios, placement competencies, and Observed Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• A Levels: AAB, including Chemistry and a second science, with a pass in the practical element of any science A Levels taken
• International Baccalaureate: 34, with 5 in Higher Level Chemistry and a second science
• BTEC Extended Diploma: DDD in Applied Science, with specific Chemistry units
• GCSE Maths and English Language: grade 6/B
• Second science subjects: Maths, Biology, and Physics
• English language requirements: GCSE English Language at grade 6/B, IELTS grade of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component, or an alternative acceptable English language qualification

Graduate Careers

After completing the MPharm degree, students will need to complete a 12-month structured foundation training period and assessment to register as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Registered pharmacists are in high demand, with excellent career prospects in community, primary care, and hospital settings.

The tuition fees for the program are:

• Home students: £9,535 (2025 annual tuition fee)
• Overseas students: £30,570 (2025 annual tuition fee)
• Additional costs: occupational health screening, immunisations, and DBS check
