Advanced Clinical Practice (GP) MMedSci
The Advanced Clinical Practice (GP) MMedSci is a postgraduate program designed for registered healthcare professionals seeking to expand their scope of practice and become leaders in primary care. This three-year, part-time course is offered by the School of Allied Health Professions, Pharmacy, Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Health.
Course Description
This program provides students with the knowledge and skills required to play an expanded role in providing care for patients. It covers all four pillars of advanced practice: clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research. Students will gain advanced skills in anatomy, history taking, and clinical examination, and develop their understanding of evidence-based practice.

- Clinical Episode Management in Primary Care
- Advanced Clinical Assessment
- Evidence Based Practice (Online)
- Clinical Leadership
- Managing Complexity in Primary Care
- Independent & Supplementary Prescribing for Nurses and Midwives
- Effective advanced practice for independent prescribers
- Critical review of clinical practice
Duration and Teaching
The program is three years long and is taught part-time. On-campus teaching takes place once a week on a set day, and students will learn through lectures, skills workshops, simulations, seminars, case-based discussions, supervised clinical practice, tripartite reviews, and reflection.
Assessment
Students will be assessed through case presentations, reports, examinations (including objective structured clinical exams), presentations, essays, and a specialist electronic portfolio.
Career Prospects
Graduates from this course can work as advanced clinical practitioners (ACPs), specializing in primary care. ACPs are experienced and knowledgeable healthcare professionals who have expanded their scope of practice to better meet the needs of patients. They are an integral part of the NHS Long-Term plan, and graduates will have plenty of opportunities to progress their careers as highly-skilled, autonomous healthcare leaders.

The School of Allied Health Professions, Nursing and Midwifery brings together expertise from across human communication sciences, nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, and orthoptics. The school aims to train compassionate, resilient, and highly skilled healthcare professionals and support them throughout their working lives.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this program, students must have:
- A minimum 2:2 undergraduate honors degree in a health discipline (e.g., nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, physiotherapy, paramedic science)
- A minimum of a grade 4/C in GCSE English Language and Maths or equivalent
- Be a qualified UK-registered healthcare professional, registered with an appropriate professional body
- Have a current trainee advanced clinical practitioner contract in the pathway-specific setting for the duration of the program
- Meet the English language requirements (IELTS 7 with 6.5 in writing and 7 in each other component)
Fees and Funding
The annual fee for this program is:
- Home (2026): £4,226
- Overseas (2026): £8,773
Applicants may be eligible for funding through learning beyond registration and NHS grants via their NHS Trust. Additionally, the University of Sheffield offers a £3,000 tuition fee discount for overseas fee-paying students and up to £2,500 for Sheffield graduates.
