Program Overview
Advanced Clinical Practice (Neonatal) MMedSci
The Advanced Clinical Practice (Neonatal) MMedSci program is designed for registered nurses, midwives, and related healthcare professionals within neonatal care who want to build on their experience to become an advanced clinical practitioner. This course is offered by the School of Allied Health Professions, Pharmacy, Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Health.
Course Description
The program aims to expand the role of healthcare professionals in neonatal care and the support they provide for newborn babies. It covers all four pillars of advanced practice: clinical practice, leadership and management, education, and research. Students will gain advanced skills in anatomy, history taking, and clinical examination, develop their understanding of evidence-based practice, and learn how to deal with complex clinical situations and improve patient services.

Duration and Attendance
The program is part-time and lasts for 3 years.
Teaching and Assessment
Students will learn through lectures, skills workshops, simulations, seminars, case-based discussions, supervised clinical practice, tripartite reviews, and reflection. Assessment methods include case presentations, reports, examinations (including objective structured clinical exams), presentations, essays, and a specialist electronic portfolio.
Career Prospects
Graduates from this course can work as advanced clinical practitioners, specializing in neonatal care. They are experienced and knowledgeable healthcare professionals who have expanded their scope of practice to better meet the needs of patients. Past students have gone on to secure senior roles within health settings, such as nurse consultant, research nurse, matron, and patient transport lead.

Entry Requirements
- Minimum 2:2 undergraduate honors degree in a health discipline.
- Minimum of a grade 4/C in GCSE English Language and Maths or equivalent.
- Applicants must be healthcare professionals registered with an appropriate professional body.
- Applicants must have been working in the pathway-specific area for a minimum of three years and hold a current relevant employment contract.
Fees and Funding
- Home (2026 annual fee): £4,226 each year
- Overseas (2026 annual fee): £8,773 each year
- NHS England funding may be available for applicants.
- A £3,000 tuition fee discount is available for overseas fee-paying students.
- Sheffield graduates may save up to £2,500 on their course fees.
