Program Overview

Program Overview

The Artificial Intelligence for Engineering MSc program at the University of Sheffield is designed to equip students with the skills to be at the forefront of the AI revolution in engineering technology. The program focuses on the foundations of data science and machine intelligence, and how to apply them to control, automation, and systems engineering.

Course Description

The program covers a range of topics, including machine learning, autonomous agents, real-time intelligent systems, and data science and modeling techniques. Students will work hands-on with state-of-the-art hardware, software, and data, and will have the opportunity to build a system from scratch using specialist labs in the University.

Modules

The program includes a range of core and optional modules, such as:

  • Individual Research Project
  • The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence
  • Modern Control & System Identification
  • Agent-Based Modelling and Multi-Agent Systems
  • Data Modelling and Machine Intelligence
  • Deep Learning
  • Data Science with Python
  • Machine Vision
  • Advanced Control
  • Mobile Robotics and Autonomous Systems
  • Natural Language Processing
  • Multisensor and Decision Systems
  • Text Processing
  • Industrial Training Programme in Artificial Intelligence for Engineering

Duration and Attendance

The program is 1 year full-time.

Teaching and Assessment

The program includes lectures, seminars, tutorials, individual assignments, and a major research project. Students will be assessed via exams, coursework assignments, and a project dissertation.

Career Prospects

Graduates from this program are well-equipped to lead in the development and use of AI tools and systems across disciplines from automotive, industrial, and aerospace to robotics, green energy, and biotech. They take up roles as software engineers, developers, AI researchers, or data scientists.

School

The program is offered by the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, which has been a leader in teaching and research for over a century in electrical engineering, and since the mid-20th century in electronics.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum 2:1 undergraduate honors degree in a relevant subject with relevant modules.
  • English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 (with 6 in each component) or University equivalent.

Fees and Funding

  • Home (2026 annual fee): £13,660
  • Overseas (2026 annual fee): £32,905
  • £3,000 scholarships for international students
