Course Description

The field of biological engineering is rapidly transforming the way we produce energy, food, and medicine. The MSc in Biological and Bioprocess Engineering provides students with expertise at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and engineering, learning how to design, optimize, and scale biomanufacturing processes.

Modules

The program includes a range of modules, such as:

  • Biopharmaceutical Engineering
  • Bioresources and Bioprocessing (PGT)
  • Advanced Bioprocess Design Project
  • Advanced Biochemical Engineering
  • Applied Biological and Bioprocess Engineering
  • Research Project Optional modules include:
    • Stem Cell Biology
    • Tissue Engineering Approaches to Failure in Living Systems
    • Synthetic Biology
    • Biopharmaceutical and Vaccine Manufacturing

Teaching and Assessment

Teaching is delivered through a blend of lectures, exposure to research seminars, workshops, and interactive laboratory sessions. Assessment includes formal examinations, coursework assignments, and an independent research project.

Career Prospects

Graduates from this program go on to work in a wide range of industries, including industrial biotechnology, biopharmaceutical manufacturing, bioenergy, and research and development. They take on roles such as bioprocess engineers, research scientists, production managers, and regulatory or quality specialists.

School

The program is offered by the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering, which is recognized for its world-leading research and teaching.

Entry Requirements

The minimum entry requirement is a 2:2 undergraduate honors degree in a relevant subject, such as any engineering, science, or technology discipline. English language requirements include an IELTS score of 6.5 (with 6 in each component) or a University equivalent.

Fees and Funding

The annual fee for home students is £13,660, and for overseas students, it is £32,905. There are also scholarships available, including a £3,000 tuition fee discount for overseas fee-paying students and up to £2,500 for Sheffield graduates.

Research Areas

The program covers a range of research areas, including biotechnology, bioprocessing, and sustainable biomanufacturing. Students have the opportunity to engage with industry through guest lectures, networking events, and site visits.

Student Profiles

Graduates from the program have gone on to successful careers in various industries, with some taking on entrepreneurial leadership roles in the biotechnology sector.

Accreditation

The program is accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
