Program Overview
Clinical Neurology MSc
The Clinical Neurology MSc is a 12-month, full-time course that provides students with a detailed understanding of the human nervous system, neurological disease, and the treatments for these conditions. The course is offered by the School of Medicine and Population Health, Faculty of Health.
Course Description
This course gives students a comprehensive understanding of neurological disease and how clinical research breakthroughs are translated into treatments. Students attend NHS clinics to learn from patients and clinicians, covering a range of conditions including cerebrovascular disease, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration.
Modules
The course consists of four taught module components worth 30 credits each, undertaken during the autumn and spring terms. The modules are:
- Applied Neuroanatomy and Clinical Neuroscience
- Cerebrovascular disease and disorders of consciousness
- Neuroinflammation (CNS) and diseases of the PNS
- Neurodegeneration
In the third semester, students select either a 60-credit clinical research project (Route A) or a Clinical Neurology Experiential Learning Module (Route B).
Route A: Clinical Research Project
Students on Route A complete a 15-week research project at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital or within the Sheffield Institute of Translational Neuroscience (SITraN). Projects can be with or without patient contact, ranging from systematic reviews to analysis of existing data sets.
Route B: Clinical Neurology Experiential Learning Module
Students on Route B spend 15 weeks immersed in the NHS neurology department at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, attending specialist clinics, ward rounds, and observing investigations. This route is only open to students who are working towards or already have a MBChB or equivalent degree.
Intercalation
The university accepts medical students who wish to intercalate their studies.
