Requirements and Application

On what criteria are applicants selected?

This study program is admission-free, provided you meet the admission requirements. There is no need for an application, and you can enroll directly. No selection process takes place.

Which requirements must I meet for studies?

The study of an extension subject - in addition to the two-subject Bachelor's degree program in teaching at a grammar school with an academic degree Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) - is designed as a supplementary master's program. Therefore, this study can only be started after the successful completion of the B.Ed. However, students can voluntarily and non-bindingly provide additional study services (pre-services extension subject) in a third subject during the B.Ed., which can later be fully credited to the Master's program in the extension subject.

For registration for the pre-services extension subject, the following framework conditions apply:

  • The student is enrolled at the University of Tübingen in the B.Ed.
  • The student is at least in one of the two main subjects in at least the 3rd semester.
  • The student can register for pre-services extension subject in exactly one additional subject (only one subject in the pre-services at the same time, subject changes are possible).
  • The student can only register in the subjects offered, i.e., in the main subjects of the B.Ed. that offer an EF or pre-services EF.
  • The student can only register in subjects where study places are available:
    • Admission-free subjects,
    • Admission-restricted subjects, in which places are available (remaining place allocation; first come, first served - see below).
  • The student is subject to the same subject-specific requirements as students who study the chosen subject as a main subject (including study prerequisites, e.g., Latinum).
  • The student has not lost the examination entitlement in the corresponding main subject.

Within this framework, students can study the regular modules of a third B.Ed. main subject, with the exception of the Bachelor's thesis.

Which languages must I know?

The language of study and examination is German. Individual courses may be conducted in English. Good English language skills are expected for literature studies. Therefore, English language skills are required. However, formal proof of English language skills is not required. German language skills in the amount of DSH-2 (TestDaF 4) are required for foreign students.

International applicants without German-language university entrance qualification must provide proof of German language proficiency in accordance with the University's enrollment regulations (see also information on proof of language proficiency / DSH language test).

Which other subjects can I combine with my main subject?

The Computer Science B.Ed. extension subject can be combined with any teaching subject offered in Tübingen.

Program Details

Which topics are dealt with in the program?

The extension subject program conveys scientific and subject-didactic foundations in the subject of computer science as well as methodological competencies necessary to teach computer science at a grammar school. The subject-didactic part also includes profession-related competencies.

What is special about the Tübingen program?

In the B.Ed. Computer Science, the courses overlap partially with the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.). Therefore, a change between the two computer science study programs is possible. Students who decide against the teaching profession after the orientation internship have a timely effective alternative to the teaching degree with the change to a Bachelor of Science in the subject of computer science.

How is the program structured?

The structure of the study program is clearly structured and consists essentially of compulsory modules with limited choice options (see modules of the B.Ed. and M.Ed. Computer Science). In parallel to the advanced subject lectures, students attend corresponding subject-didactic events and deal with conceptual questions of conveying computer science.

Optional time abroad
You may choose to spend some time abroad as part of any study program. You should start planning it 12 to 18 months before your departure.
Here you will find general information and advice on studying abroad. In addition, some departments have their own subject-specific services providing information on studying abroad.

After Your Studies

Career Prospects

The Bachelor of Education as a degree alone is not professionally qualifying in the public school service. However, you can apply for jobs on the free labor market with this academic degree or continue studying in a master's program.

Teachers at grammar schools are missing in large numbers, especially also in the natural and engineering sciences subjects. The career prospects for graduates of the M.Ed. Computer Science program are therefore excellent.

So far, there is unfortunately no experience with how graduates of the B.Ed. Computer Science are received on the free labor market. But generally, computer scientists have very good job prospects.

Advice and internships
The University's Career Service assists with careers orientation and getting started in your profession. Jobs and internships can be found in the Praxisportal.

Postgraduate Programs

As a rule, a corresponding master's program is attached to the bachelor's program (often referred to as "consecutive master's programs"). Admission requirements for the respective master's programs can be found on the corresponding websites.

Doctorate Options

Admission to the doctorate with a bachelor's degree is not possible. For admission to the doctorate, the completion of a master's program is required.
