Program Details
The program in Greek Philology deals with the literary testimonies of Greek culture from Homer to the late antiquity, as well as the history of their impact up to the present day. The teaching covers central authors (e.g., Homer, Hesiod, archaic lyric poetry, Sophocles, Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle, Callimachus, Plutarch, Lucian, and philosophical authors of the imperial era and late antiquity, such as Iamblichus and Proclus) and applies both literary and cultural-scientific methods and approaches. The ancient Greek literature developed the fundamental European conceptions of poetics, history, politics, science, religion, art, and philosophy, and thus provides fundamental core competencies that are relevant for any in-depth engagement with these areas.
