Requirements and application

On what criteria are applicants selected?

The B.A. program is restricted. In the major subject, 95 study places are allocated in each winter semester, and 32 in the minor subject. The most important criterion is the Abitur grade; your chances are improved by a completed vocational training or relevant internships. The selection procedure is regulated in detail in the selection statute, which can be found in the download area "Important study documents" of the Institute for Media Science.

Which requirements must I meet for studies?

Applications are made through ALMA. The proof of higher education entrance qualification must be attached. If the higher education entrance qualification was acquired in a non-German-speaking country, a DSH examination is also required, in which at least the grade 2-3 was achieved (i.e., 75% of the achievable points). If you have completed vocational training or have already worked in media practice (e.g., internship, freelance work), we ask you to attach certificates and work samples. The same applies to stays abroad and additional foreign language certificates, which can be proven by certificates and certificates.

Which languages must I know?

The study of media science requires very good knowledge of the German language and excellent linguistic expressiveness. In addition, good English skills and at least one other foreign language are required, which must be proven in the selection process.

Which other subjects can I combine with my main subject?

Since the B.A. program as a major subject is a combination study program, the minor subject can be chosen freely. There is a relatively large number of possible minor subjects, which are listed in the directory of study programs on the University of Tübingen's website under the study programs. When choosing the minor subject, you should ensure that it corresponds to your personal interests and professional goals.

The B.A. program as a minor subject can be studied in combination with a Bachelor's major subject. The possible major subjects are also listed in the directory of study programs on the University of Tübingen's website.

Program details

Which topics are dealt with in the program?

The B.A. program offers an integrative profile that combines the artistic, literary, and linguistic tradition of the subject with the tradition of empirical social research. The goal is to train specialization-capable generalists for different professional fields: from journalism to strategic communication, from radio to film and television, from web design to computer game development, from media research to media science.

If you study as a B.A. major subject, you have the choice between two different profile lines within the program:

  • The "Media Culture and Aesthetics" profile enables you to identify, explain, and critically question forms of media change and media convergence, new offer and information structures, and technical challenges in the constantly changing media communication. Graduates know the current international trends, but also the historical lines of development in media cultures - with regard to journalism and documentary narrative forms, as well as fictional media offerings for different target groups (e.g., media and film art, photography). They are able to analyze the production of meaning in media cultures due to the knowledge they have acquired in media theories, media aesthetics, media production, and reception in digital media environments. In practice-oriented courses, you will be enabled to realize media-scientific and media-practical projects in a methodical and group-oriented manner and to present the results of your work in a scientifically, journalistically, or artistically contoured form.
  • The "Media and Public Communication" profile enables you to identify and critically analyze the conditions, consequences, contents, and meanings of medially communicated, public, and interpersonal communication in a dynamic media environment characterized by societal processes of digitalization, globalization, individualization, mediatization, and economization. Graduates are able to apply their theoretical, methodical, and empirical knowledge in the analysis of forms of public communication (e.g., journalism, advertising, public relations, or media entertainment) and interpersonal communication (e.g., in social networks) in order to systematically analyze media content, actors, and audiences. You will be enabled to realize a communication-scientific project in a methodical and group-oriented manner and to present the results of your work in a scientific form.

How is the program structured?

The B.A. program as a major subject consists of five areas: In the first three semesters, you will work on the basics of media science. In parallel, you will acquire knowledge in the area of research and analysis. The program is also characterized by a strong practical reference, which is reflected in several editorial offices. In the profile area, you will deepen your knowledge and competencies in one of the two profile lines "Media Culture and Aesthetics" or "Media and Public Communication". Finally, you will complete the program with a mandatory internship and your Bachelor's thesis.

In the B.A. program as a minor subject, participation in modules of the basic study program is required (60 ECTS). The students should be given a media-scientific and media-practical basic training within six semesters. The teaching offer in the Bachelor minor subject is divided into three areas: In the first three semesters, you will work on the basics of media science. In parallel, you will acquire knowledge in the area of research and analysis. The program is also characterized by a strong practical reference, which is reflected in several editorial offices. Through intensive group and project work, guided by media-experienced lecturers and practice lecturers, you will acquire a wide range of analytically, methodically, practically, and strategically applicable competencies during your studies.

More detailed descriptions of the modules can be found in the module handbook of the Institute for Media Science.

Is study abroad expected?

The B.A. program is organized as a compact study program, but it should also give you the opportunity to gain new experiences through a stay abroad. The stay abroad is not a fixed part of the program, but an option to design your studies individually. You will receive further information and support from the Erasmus departmental coordination of the Institute for Media Science.
