Requirements and Application

On What Criteria Are Applicants Selected?

This study program is admission-free, provided that the admission requirements are met. There is no need for an application, and no selection process takes place.

Which Requirements Must I Meet for Studies?

The study of an extension subject - in addition to the two-subject study of the Bachelor's degree program in teaching at the Gymnasium with an academic degree of Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) - is designed as a supplementary Master's program. Therefore, this study can only be started after the successful completion of the B.Ed. However, students can voluntarily and on a non-binding basis take additional study achievements (pre-achievements extension subject) in a third subject during the B.Ed., which can later be fully credited to the Master's program in the extension subject.

For registration for the pre-achievements extension subject, the following framework conditions apply:

  • The student is enrolled at the University of Tübingen in the B.Ed.
  • The student is at least in one of the two main subjects in at least the 3rd semester.
  • The student can register for pre-achievements extension subject in exactly one additional subject (only one subject in the pre-achievements at the same time, subject changes are possible).
  • The student can only register for subjects in which study places are available:
    • Admission-free subjects,
    • Admission-restricted subjects, in which places are available (allocation of remaining places; first come, first served).
  • The student is subject to the same subject-specific requirements as students who study the chosen subject as a main subject (including study prerequisites, e.g., Latinum).
  • The student has not lost the examination entitlement in the corresponding main subject.

Which Languages Must I Know?

The language of study and examination is German. Individual courses may be conducted in English. Good English language skills are expected for literature studies. Therefore, English language skills are required. However, formal proof of English language skills is not required. German language skills in the amount of DSH-2 (TestDaF 4) are required for foreign students.

International applicants without a German-language university entrance qualification must provide proof of German language skills in accordance with the enrollment regulations of the university (see also information on proof of language proficiency / DSH language test).

What Is Special About the Tübingen Program?

The study program is organized by the departments of biology, chemistry, physics, and (physical) geography of the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and is carried out in cooperation with the universities of Esslingen and Rottenburg, as well as with the participation of industrial companies, such as Robert Bosch GmbH.

How Is the Program Structured?

The module handbook of the teaching degree program NwT presents the ideal study paths, depending on the four possible subject combinations (biology, chemistry, geography, or physics).

Is Study Abroad Expected?

Optional time abroad: You may choose to spend some time abroad as part of any study program. You should start planning it 12 to 18 months before your departure.

After Your Studies

Career Prospects

The B.Ed. as a degree alone is not professionally qualifying in the public school service. However, you can apply for jobs on the free labor market with this academic degree or continue studying in a Master's program.

Postgraduate Programs

As a rule, the corresponding Master's program in NwT M.Ed. extension subject follows the Bachelor's degree program. Admission requirements for the respective Master's programs can be found on the corresponding websites.

Doctorate Options

Admission to a doctorate with a Bachelor's degree is not possible. For admission to a doctorate, the completion of a Master's degree program is required.
