BA (Hons) Business and Society

The BA (Hons) Business and Society program is designed to equip students with the skills to analyze complex problems and produce creative solutions. This course draws together concepts, theories, and evidence from the disciplines of business and management as well as social and public policy.

Overview

• The program is based in the University of York’s cross-disciplinary School for Business and Society.
• It incorporates strong links with business and policy communities.
• Students have the opportunity to undertake placements in private, public, and voluntary sector organizations while gaining an international perspective to studying issues of business and society.

Course Content

The course content includes:

• Year 1: Core modules such as Economy and Society, Introduction to Business Ethics and Sustainability, Contemporary Issues in Social and Public Policy, and more.
• Year 2: Core modules including The Policy Think Tank, Business Planning and Sustainable Entrepreneurship, Capitalism and the Public Good, and others.
• Year 3: Core modules like Management in the Twenty-First Century, Independent Study Module or Dissertation, and option modules such as The Dark Side of Organisations, Leadership in Practice, and more.

Fees and Funding

• The annual tuition fees for UK (home) students are £9,535, and for international and EU students, they are £27,250.
• Fees for subsequent years may increase within the government fee cap for UK (home) students and in line with the prevailing Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate for international students.
• Funding opportunities include UK government loans, UK scholarships and bursaries, international scholarships, and country-specific funding.

Teaching and Assessment

• The teaching format includes lectures, small-group seminars, activity-based workshops, group projects, and individual projects.
• Assessment is through a mixture of assignments, many with an applied focus, such as reports, strategy documents, presentations, and essays.
• In the final year, students have some scope to choose forms of assessment that they prefer through the selection of optional modules.

• The program enables students to look across different sectors and gain a thorough understanding of how businesses and public policy interact and are crucial for addressing grand challenges.
• Career opportunities include social enterprise, charity, civil service, policy advocacy, public-private partnerships, and voluntary sector organizations.

Entry Requirements

• Qualification requirements include A levels (AAB), Access to Higher Education Diploma (36 credits at Distinction and 9 credits at Merit or higher), BTEC National Extended Diploma (DDD), and others.
• Additional requirements include GCSE Mathematics at grade 4 (C) or equivalent.
• Alternative offers may be made based on widening participation, contextual offer, EPQ, and Core Maths.
• English language requirements include IELTS (Academic) with a minimum of 6.5, IB English, Cambridge CEFR, and others.
