Program Overview


MA Editing for Film and Television Production

The MA Editing for Film and Television Production is a one-year full-time program designed to equip students with the high-level editing skills required to compete in a diverse global film marketplace. The program is offered by the School of Arts and Creative Technologies and is available for entry in September 2026.


Overview

The program combines creativity with academic theory, allowing students to develop their knowledge and practice of post-production techniques in industry-standard facilities. Students will gain valuable hands-on experience in the university's £35m arts and media complex, featuring HD TV studios, a digital cinema, and post-production labs.


Course Content

The program covers the theory and practice of storytelling in the edit, investigating structure, emotional journey, performance, point of view, sound design in the edit, and more. Students will work collaboratively with MA students from other disciplines, editing documentary and fiction films, and will have the opportunity to attend weekly film and TV screenings and talks or masterclasses with leading film and television professionals.


Modules

The program consists of five core modules, including:


  • Editing I: Provides a solid training from basic to advanced on Avid Media Composer.
  • Grading, Effects and Finishing: Covers grading with DaVinci Resolve.
  • Editing II: Continues the training on Avid Media Composer.
  • Individual Project: Allows students to work on their own project, with the option to make a film and write a report or write a research-based dissertation.
  • Group Projects: Involves editing two group project films, collaborating with fellow MA students.

Entry Requirements

The program requires a 2:2 or equivalent undergraduate degree, and evidence of professional experience or a commitment to film making. International students may need to provide evidence of their English language ability, with minimum requirements including:


  • IELTS (Academic and Indicator): 6.5, minimum 6.0 in each component
  • Cambridge CEFR: B2 First: 176, with 169 in each component
  • Oxford ELLT: 7, minimum of 6 in each component
  • Oxford Test of English Advanced: 136, minimum 126 in each component
  • Duolingo: 120, minimum 105 in all other components
  • LanguageCert SELT: B2 with 33/50 in each component
  • LanguageCert Academic: 70 with a minimum of 65 in each component
