MA Music Education with Performance

The MA Music Education with Performance is a postgraduate program that explores the creative possibilities of integrating pedagogy with performance. This program is designed for individuals who wish to enhance their technical, artistic, and instrumental or vocal teaching abilities.

Overview

The program is offered by the School of Arts and Creative Technologies and is available for both full-time and part-time study. The full-time program lasts for one year, while the part-time program lasts for two years.

Course Content

The program consists of a combination of theoretical, practical, and recital modules. Students will take core modules drawn from postgraduate music education and performance courses, including:

• One-to-one Teaching (Beginner-Intermediate)
• Effective Pedagogy
• Recital I
• One-to-one Teaching (Intermediate-Advanced)
• Enhanced Student-centred Pedagogy

The final project will involve a substantial public recital and accompanying pedagogical essay, where students will showcase their artistic and scholarly insight, advanced technique, musical communication, and interpretation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:

• Plan and deliver effective face-to-face and online instrumental/vocal lessons
• Apply critical understanding of professional issues including safeguarding, child protection, and instrumental studio management
• Critically examine, analyse, and evaluate existing pedagogical material and research literature
• Plan and execute critically informed performances
• Lead or constructively contribute to advanced-level musical activity
• Communicate at an advanced level on a range of issues relating to the history and present of musical repertoire and its performance

Fees and Funding

The annual tuition fees for the program are as follows:

• Full-time (1 year): £12,000 (UK), £27,250 (International and EU)
• Part-time (2 years): £6,000 (UK), £13,625 (International and EU)

Students may be eligible for funding opportunities, including UK government Masters loans, scholarships, and bursaries.

Teaching and Assessment

The program will be taught through a variety of formats, including seminars, practical sessions, and one-to-one tuition. Students will be assessed through a combination of recitals, essays, and other assignments.

Careers and Skills

The program will equip students with the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in music education and performance. Graduates may go on to work as music teachers, school teachers, education specialists, community arts workers, or performers.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a 2:2 or equivalent undergraduate degree. Additional requirements include submitting a sample of creative work and meeting the English language requirements.

English Language Requirements

If English is not the applicant's first language, they must provide evidence of their English language ability, such as IELTS or TOEFL scores.
