PhD in Architecture

The PhD in Architecture at the University of York is a research-based program that seeks to redefine the role of the architect and established practices within a constantly changing social, cultural, and environmental landscape. The program advances fields of enquiry into theory and history of architecture as a practice, responsible design, community architecture, architectural heritage, and urban design, sustainable buildings, and virtual architecture.

Program Structure

The PhD program typically lasts 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time. Students work towards a final thesis of 80,000 words under the guidance of their supervisor. A typical semester involves a great deal of independent research, with guidance from the supervisor who suggests direction and addresses concerns.

Training and Support

Students receive training in research methods and skills appropriate to the nature of their work. They also receive guidance in proposal writing, preparing and submitting material for publication, and transferable communication skills. Regular supervisory meetings are held to discuss planning, researching, and writing the thesis.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent experience. Supervisors interview prospective research students to ensure a good supervisory match and to help with funding applications.

English Language Requirements

If English is not the applicant's first language, they must provide evidence of their ability.

Research Proposal

Applicants must submit a clear, well-structured research proposal of around 2000 words, including:

• Provisional title of research
• Summary of the topic and research interest
• Brief overview of relevant research in the field and key research gaps/literature
• Research broad aims and objectives
• Potential research approach and methods
• Key readership and references in this topic

Funding

The university offers various funding opportunities for postgraduate researchers in architecture.

Supervision

Students work under the guidance of experienced supervisors who are industry professionals delivering impactful research. Supervisors monitor progress, help hone the focus of the research, and provide training in research methods and skills.

Location

The program is based in the York School of Architecture, though research may take students further afield.
