Translational Biosciences PhD Program
The School of Medicine (SOM) at the University of Missouri-Columbia offers an innovative training program with the Translational Biosciences PhD. This program represents a new paradigm for graduate training in biomedical research, spanning the entire breadth of the biomedical research spectrum, from basic science discoveries to improved clinical outcomes and population health.
Program Description
The Translational Biosciences PhD program includes six emphasis areas:
- Biochemistry and Biophysics
- Cancer Biology
- Infection and Immunity
- Integrative Physiology
- Nutrition and Exercise Physiology
- Population and Precision Health
The program provides PhD graduates with both a deep knowledge base of their chosen discipline and the ability to communicate and collaborate across disciplines. Through close collaborations with outstanding scientists and clinicians, the program offers state-of-the-art research training to young biomedical scientists.

Admission Criteria
- Minimum GPA: 3.0
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or University
- Only completed applications will be considered for Fall admission. Applicants are selected for admission based on their potential to conduct high-quality, independent research.
Minimum Language Requirements
Minimum English language proficiency test scores are required.

For the School of Medicine Translational Biosciences Program
- 3 letters of recommendation
- Personal statement: Should be at least two paragraphs in length, including why you want to complete your Ph.D. training in this program, your goals, previous research experience, which emphasis area you are interested in, and why.
- A CV highlighting any conferences, abstracts, articles, etc.
- Official TOEFL or IELTS scores (International applicants only)
