BSc Economics

The BSc Economics programme at the London School of Economics (LSE) is designed to provide students with a solid grounding in analytical techniques, statistical theory, and quantitative methods, and to apply these skills to complex real-world problems. The programme is taught by world-leading academics and researchers in the field of economics.

Introduction

The programme explores a wide range of questions, including how to tackle widening economic inequalities, why the gender pay gap persists, and how to deal with climate change. Students will gain a firm foundation in economics and develop essential quantitative skills, before moving on to introductory courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics.

Accreditations

The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) for the purpose of exemption from all four certificate-level CIMA modules through the Accredited degree accelerated route.

Preliminary Readings

Students are encouraged to read popular books on economics, such as "Poor Economics" by A V Banerjee and E Duflo, "GDP: a brief but affectionate history" by D Coyle, and "The Undercover Economist" by T Harford, to gain further insight into what economists study.

Entry Requirements

The programme has specific entry requirements, including:

• GCSEs: several GCSE grades at A (or 7) and A* (or 8-9), with a minimum of GCSE English Language and Mathematics grades at B (6) or higher
• A-levels: A*AA with an A* in Mathematics, with consideration given to AS grades and subject combinations
• IB Diploma: 39 points overall, with 766 in higher level subjects, including 7 in Mathematics
• Additional tests: applicants are required to take the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA)

Programme Content

The programme consists of 12 units over three years, plus LSE100. Students will have the chance to apply for a year abroad with one of LSE's global exchange partners.

• Econometrics I (EC1C1)
• Methods in Calculus and Linear Algebra (MA108)
• Macroeconomics I (EC1B1)
• The LSE Course (LSE100)
• One outside option during Autumn Term
• One outside option during Winter Term

Year 2

• Microeconomics II (EC2A1)
• Macroeconomics II (EC2B1)
• Econometrics II (EC2C1)
• One optional course to the value of one unit, or two half-unit options

Year 3

• Four options from economics or closely related subjects

The tuition fees for the programme are:

• Home student fee: £9,535 per year
• Overseas student fee: £39,900 per year

Learning and Assessment

The programme is taught through a combination of lectures, classes, and independent study. Assessment is largely through examinations, with some coursework and other forms of assessment.

This degree provides an excellent preparation for a range of careers, including positions in the financial sector, economic or management consulting, central banks, government economic services, and international organisations. Many graduates also go on to pursue further study in economics, finance, or related fields.
