Program Overview


Introduction to the BSc Politics and Economics Programme

The BSc Politics and Economics programme at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is a world-leading course that examines the impact of politics and economics on society and everyday life. This programme provides students with a solid grounding in key political concepts and theories, as well as core analytical methods in economics.


Programme Overview

The programme is divided equally between politics and economics, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests and career aspirations. Students will study 12 units over three years, plus LSE100, which introduces students to the key skills and concepts required for studying at LSE.


Year 1

In the first year, students will take two half-unit economics courses, two politics courses, two half-unit quantitative methods courses, and LSE100. The courses include:


  • GV100: Introduction to Political Theory
  • GV101: Introduction to Political Science
  • EC1A3: Microeconomics I
  • EC1B3: Macroeconomics I
  • MA107: Quantitative Methods (Mathematics)
  • ST107: Quantitative Methods (Statistics)
  • LSE100: The LSE Course

Year 2

In the second year, students will take courses in econometrics and further courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics. They will also choose two courses from a range of government options.


Year 3

In the third year, students can choose between various economics and politics optional courses, including a government dissertation and options from outside the Politics and Economics departments.


Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the programme, students must meet the following requirements:


  • Home students: AAA, including Mathematics, at A-level
  • Overseas students: 38 points overall, including 766 at higher level, including Mathematics, in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
  • Contextual admissions: AAB, including A in Mathematics, at A-level, or 37 points overall, including 666 at higher level, including Mathematics, in the IB Diploma

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the programme are:


  • Home students: £9,535 per year
  • Overseas students: £30,700 per year LSE provides generous financial support, in the form of bursaries and scholarships, to UK, EU, and overseas students.

Learning and Assessment

The programme is taught through a combination of lectures and classes, with a focus on small group teaching. Students will be assessed through a range of methods, including written examinations, assessed essays, and a dissertation.
