MPhil/PhD in Management - Information Systems and Innovation

The MPhil/PhD in Management - Information Systems and Innovation is a research-based program that explores the complex interactions between information technology, organizations, and society. Students will contribute original research in their chosen area, with the opportunity to specialize in a designated field.

Overview

• Introduction to the program: The program is designed to provide students with the quantitative and qualitative skills to contribute robust socio-technical research to the field of digital innovation.
• Preliminary readings: Students are expected to read several books, including "Data Rules: Reinventing the Market Economy" by Cristina Alaimo and Jannis Kallinikos, "The Routledge companion to management information systems" by Robert Galliers and Mari-Klara Stein, and "The Oxford Handbook of Management Information Systems: Critical Perspectives and New Directions" by Robert D Galliers and Wendy Currie.

Entry Requirements

• Academic background: A 2:1 bachelor’s degree or equivalent in computer science or a social science discipline, plus high merit (65+) in a master’s degree or equivalent in information systems or management or a related discipline.
• Additional tests: GMAT or GRE is recommended, but not mandatory, and must be no more than five years before 1 October 2026.
• English language requirements: The English language requirement for this program is Research.

Programme Content

• Year 1: Students will take taught courses in qualitative and quantitative methodology and analysis, one additional specialist methods course, and two specialist courses to deepen their knowledge of current research practices and theoretical approaches in Information Systems and Digital Innovation.
• Year 2: Students will prepare and submit their PhD Proposal, which will be examined in the form of a viva with a panel from the Faculty Group.
• Years 3 and 4: Students will continue to work on their research and writing, with the opportunity to undertake further training if needed and participate in the Advanced Quantitative Analysis for Research in Management.
