Program Overview

Program Overview

The Visiting Research Student (VRS) program at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) allows research students from other universities to spend up to a year at LSE, engaging in research, accessing resources, and collaborating with leading academics.

Introduction

The VRS scheme is designed for students who are registered as doctoral researchers at other institutions. It enables them to participate in research activities in the department and the School, interact with other research students, and benefit from the expertise of LSE faculty, the training offered by the PhD Academy, and LSE Library facilities. Note that Visiting Research Students do not have access to any LSE taught courses.

Eligibility and Application

To apply as a visiting research student, applicants must meet the same entry criteria as for the MRes/PhD programs. The application process involves submitting a form with the following information:

  • Academic achievement (including existing and pending qualifications)
  • Statement of academic purpose
  • References
  • CV
  • Outline research proposal
  • Sample of written work

Applicants may need to provide evidence of their English language proficiency. Competition for places at LSE is strong, and meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee an offer of a place.

Fees and Funding

The tuition fees for the VRS program are as follows:

  • Home student fee per week (2026/27): £104
  • Overseas student fee per week (2026/27): £104

All students pay the same tuition fees, regardless of their fee status. Students are expected to be self-funded.

Research Areas

The Department of International Development at LSE explores the causes of poverty, social exclusion, economic stagnation, humanitarian crises, and human security. Research within the department spans several broad themes, and teaching staff have considerable experience living and working in the developing world.

Department Overview

The Department of International Development was formed in 1990 and provides a focus for postgraduate teaching and research on the processes of social, political, and economic development and change. The department offers six taught MSc programs and a stimulating research program, with research projects across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Why Study at LSE

LSE is a world-renowned institution, ranked as the University of the Year 2025 and 1st in the UK. It is also 1st in London for the 14th year running and 6th in the world according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025. LSE became the first Carbon Neutral verified university in the UK in 2021.

Related Programs

Related programs include the MRes/PhD International Development, which allows students to develop a deep understanding of complex processes of social, political, and economic change and produce original research on international development themes.
