Program Overview


Introduction to the Genetica Medica Program

The Scuola di specializzazione in Genetica Medica is a four-year program designed to form specialists with in-depth knowledge in the field of Medical Genetics, both in clinical and laboratory settings. The program aims to equip students with the skills necessary to provide useful information for the diagnosis, control, and prevention of genetic diseases, as well as to assist other specialists in recognizing, diagnosing, and managing these conditions.


Program Objectives

The primary objectives of the program are to:


  • Form specialists with a deep understanding of the scientific and professional aspects of Medical Genetics.
  • Enable students to interpret and manage the results of laboratory analyses that support the diagnosis of genetic diseases.
  • Provide students with theoretical, scientific, and professional knowledge related to the biological bases of genetic diseases, including chromosomal, genetic, and complex diseases with a significant genetic component.

Program Structure

The program is structured to last four years and includes the acquisition of 240 CFU (Crediti Formativi Universitari). The curriculum is designed to ensure that students develop specific knowledge in genetic and hereditary diseases, including those caused by somatic mutations, and acquire theoretical and practical knowledge in genetic counseling and the activities of the medical genetics laboratory in cytogenetic, molecular, genomic, and immunogenetic fields.


Admission Requirements

Admission to the program is reserved for individuals with a degree in:


  • Biologia (LM-6)
  • Biotecnologie mediche veterinarie e farmaceutiche (LM-9)
  • Biotecnologia industriale (LM-8)
  • Biotecnologie agrarie e per alimenti (LM-7)
  • Equivalent degrees as per the D.I. 5.5.2004 and D.I. 9.7.2009. Candidates must also possess the relevant professional qualification and be registered with the relevant professional body by the deadline for the call.

Admission Process

The admission process involves:


  • A written examination
  • An oral examination
  • Evaluation of the candidate's qualifications The maximum score that can be awarded by the evaluation committee is 100 points, with 40 points for the written examination, 40 points for the oral examination, and 20 points for the evaluation of qualifications.

Evaluation of Qualifications

The evaluation committee has a total of 20 points available for the evaluation of qualifications, distributed as follows:


  • Up to 5 points for the degree grade
  • Up to 3 points for exams
  • Up to 7 points for the degree thesis
  • Up to 5 points for publications

  • Posti e borse: 2 positions with scholarships
  • Frequenza Obbligatoria: Attendance at lectures, conferences, seminars, and practical activities is mandatory, with a minimum attendance requirement of 70% for each activity.
  • Esame finale: The final examination consists of a theoretical-practical examination in the last year, followed by the discussion of the specialization thesis, taking into account the results of periodic evaluations and the judgments of the teaching tutors for the professionalizing part.
