Program Overview

The Seoul National University English Language and Literature Department offers a comprehensive undergraduate program in English Language and Literature.


Program Requirements

To complete the undergraduate program, students must fulfill the following requirements:


  • Total of 130 credits or more
  • 36 credits or more of general education courses
  • 60 credits or more of major courses for a single major
  • For double majors or combined majors: 39 credits or more of major courses for each major
  • For a single major and a minor: 39 credits or more of major courses and 21 credits or more of minor courses
  • Completion of the teacher training course (22 credits or more) for those pursuing a teaching career

College of Humanities Requirements

In addition to the university requirements, students must also fulfill the following college requirements:


  • Completion of "Life and Humanities" (applies to students admitted in 2010 or later)
  • Completion of either "Small Group Classical Reading 1" or "Small Group Classical Reading 2"
  • Completion of 9 credits or more of a second foreign language (including at least one intermediate-level course)
  • Completion of 3 or more courses taught in a foreign language (applies to students admitted in 2008 or later, excluding transfer students and international students)

Department of English Language and Literature Requirements

Students majoring in English Language and Literature must also fulfill the following departmental requirements:


  • Completion of at least two out of three literature overview courses (British Literature Overview 1, British Literature Overview 2, American Literature Overview)
  • Completion of at least one linguistics course
  • Fulfillment of the English writing requirement:
    • Students with a TEPS-Writing score below 71: completion of "University English 2: Writing" or "Advanced English: Academic Writing" with a grade of B0 or higher
    • Students with a TEPS-Writing score of 71 or higher: completion of the "English Writing" course is recommended
  • Completion of a graduation thesis

Graduation Evaluation Criteria

To be eligible for graduation, students must meet the following criteria:


  • Application for graduation must be submitted online through mySNU (Academic Information > Graduation > Graduation Application) before one-quarter of the semester has passed
  • Students must have registered for at least six semesters and be currently registered without any changes in their academic status
  • The overall grade point average must be 2.0 or higher
  • The grade point average for the major, double major, minor, combined major, and combined minor must be 2.0 or higher
  • Students must receive a passing grade on their graduation thesis
