Curriculum
Classical, Medieval, and Modern Studies
The Indian Language and Culture Major is broadly divided into classical, medieval, and modern studies. The classical tradition explores the essence of human existence and the world as depicted in various religious and philosophical texts. Students delve into the epic poems, dramas, and religious scriptures that flourished during India's golden age, as well as the cultural and ideological influences that spread to Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and East Asia.
The medieval period examines the transformations that occurred in Indian civilization following the introduction of Islam, while the modern era focuses on the colonial period, independence, and contemporary India. The program also covers the historical experiences and cultural diversity that have shaped modern India, providing a foundational understanding of the challenges the country faces today.
Language Training
Students majoring in Indian Language and Culture are required to complete at least four semesters of language courses in Hindi and Sanskrit. The language curriculum may consist entirely of Hindi or Sanskrit or a combination of both. Additionally, the program offers courses in other modern Indian languages, such as Bengali and Tamil, to broaden students' linguistic capabilities.
Advanced language training is available for students who have completed more than a year of language study, providing them with the opportunity to participate in language courses offered in India and around the world to enhance their language proficiency.
