Introduction to Student-Designed Majors

Student-designed majors are academic programs that allow students to create their own curriculum, with the approval of the university. These programs are designed for students with unique academic interests that may not be met by existing majors.

Eligibility for Student-Designed Majors

  • Students must have completed at least two regular semesters and earned a minimum of 24 credits.
  • Students must have completed at least 8 credits in the "Foundations of Knowledge" area (formerly "Basic Studies").
  • Students must have completed the "Topic Exploration Seminar 1" and "Major Design 2" courses offered by the Liberal Arts Department.

Application Procedure for Student-Designed Majors

  • Students must submit an application through the university's portal system during the designated application period.
  • The application must include a detailed proposal outlining the student's academic goals, course plan, and rationale for the proposed major.

Changing or Canceling a Student-Designed Major

  • Students may change their major only once, and must follow the same procedure as for changing their course schedule.
  • To cancel a student-designed major, students must submit a cancellation request through the university's portal system during the designated cancellation period.

Advanced Major Application and Cancellation Procedure

  • Students who have been approved for a student-designed major and wish to pursue an advanced major must submit a separate application and receive approval from the Student-Designed Major Committee.
  • To cancel an advanced major, students must submit a cancellation request and receive approval from the Student-Designed Major Committee.

Selection Criteria for Student-Designed Majors

  • The number of students selected for student-designed majors may vary each semester, depending on the quality of the proposals and the availability of resources.
  • The selection committee considers factors such as the student's academic record, the coherence and feasibility of the proposed major, and the student's potential for success.

Credit Requirements for Student-Designed Majors

  • Students must complete a minimum of 39 credits (60 credits for advanced majors) to graduate with a student-designed major.
  • The major must include a minimum of 13 credits of required courses, including a "Comprehensive Design" course.
