Program Overview


Undergraduate Program

The undergraduate program in English Language and Literature at Seoul National University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field. The program requires students to complete a minimum of 130 credits, including 36 credits in general education courses and 39 credits in major courses.


Graduation Requirements

To graduate, students must meet the following requirements:


  • Complete a minimum of 130 credits, including 36 credits in general education courses and 39 credits in major courses.
  • Achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Complete all required courses, including:
    • English Major: 9 credits (6 credits in survey courses and 3 credits in linguistics courses).
    • Second Foreign Language: 9 credits, including one intermediate-level course.
    • Foreign Language Lectures: 3 courses, including one English language course.
    • Life and Humanities: required for students who entered the university in 2010 or later.
  • Pass the graduation thesis.

English Major Requirements

The English major requires students to complete the following courses:


  • Survey Courses: 6 credits (British Literature Survey 1 and 2, American Literature Survey).
  • Linguistics Courses: 3 credits (English Phonetics, English and Society, English Discourse Analysis, Corpus Linguistics, Advanced English Grammar, English Syntax, English Semantics, Applied English Linguistics, English Language History, English Linguistics).
  • Writing Requirements: students who score below 71 on the TEPS-Writing test are required to take the English Writing course.

Graduation Thesis

The graduation thesis is a required component of the undergraduate program. Students are expected to:


  • Choose a thesis advisor and receive guidance during the semester before graduation.
  • Attend a thesis workshop at the beginning of the semester.
  • Submit a draft of the thesis by the middle of the semester.
  • Present the thesis at the end of the semester.
  • Submit the final thesis by the end of the semester.

Additional Requirements

  • BDG: students are required to complete a minimum of 12 credits in BDG courses.
  • Undergraduate Courses: students can choose from a variety of courses, including literature, linguistics, and cultural studies.
