The Advanced Certificate Programme in Supporting Children and Adolescents with Special Educational Needs is designed to provide comprehensive training to support school-aged children and young people with Special Educational Needs. It takes a holistic approach by integrating evidence-based practices from different professions, including educational psychologists, social workers, speech therapists, music therapists, and expressive arts therapists, in the critical contexts of educational initiatives, emotional support, and community engagement in addressing a diverse range of conditions and challenges related to Special Educational Needs (SEN).

Admission Requirement
Applicants should have:
- Level 2 in five subjects in Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination, including Chinese Language and English Language, or equivalent
- Passed in one A Level or two AS Level plus five passes in HKCEE, including Level 2 / Grade E in Chinese Language and English Language, or equivalent
- Be a graduate of the Diploma Programme in Special Educational Needs offered by CUSCS or equivalent
- Be aged 21 with at least 3 years of relevant working experience
Objectives
The programme aims to provide participants with comprehensive training to support children and adolescents with Special Educational Needs, integrating evidence-based practices from various professions.
Programme Contents
The programme consists of 5 modules:
- Module 1: Identification and Assessment of Developmental Needs of Students with Special Educational Needs (30 hours)
- Module 2: Strategies for Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs Through Music and Expressive Arts (30 hours)
- Module 3: Use of Speech Therapy in Multi-intervention Strategies for Students with Special Educational Needs (30 hours)
- Module 4: Teaching Strategies for Students with Special Educational Needs in Inclusive Educational Settings (15 hours)
- Module 5: Project-based Learning on Practical Skills to Support Students with Special Educational Needs (15 hours)
Module Details
Module 1: Identification and Assessment of Developmental Needs of Students with Special Educational Needs
From the perspective of educational psychology, students will learn about assessment of different developmental areas of special educational needs and corresponding effective intervention strategies in a holistic and integrative approach.
Module 2: Strategies for Supporting Students with Special Educational Needs Through Music and Expressive Arts
Participants will explore creative mediums and experience how different art forms support SEN students.
Module 3: Use of Speech Therapy in Multi-intervention Strategies for Students with Special Educational Needs
Participants will explore multiple speech therapy-related intervention strategies and creative mediums, storytelling, and interactive games to develop tailored approaches for SEN students.
Module 4: Teaching Strategies for Students with Special Educational Needs in Inclusive Educational Settings
This course aims to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills to provide support to SEN students from an inclusive education perspective.
Module 5: Project-based Learning on Practical Skills to Support Students with Special Educational Needs
This course aims to enable students to grasp the professional knowledge as well as practical skills in terms of planning, implementation, and evaluation of support programmes for SEN students.
Mode of Delivery
The programme will be delivered by a 3-hour face-to-face lecture once a week.
Assessment Methods and Award of Certificate
Participants will be awarded the 'Advanced Certificate in Supporting Children and Adolescents with Special Educational Needs' upon fulfilling the following requirements:
- Have an attendance rate of 70% or above in each course
- Have passed the assessment of each course
Attendance
A minimum of 70% attendance in each module is required.
Acceptance
Subject to the decision of a selection committee.
Alterations
The School reserves the right to make alterations regarding the instructor, time, place, and content of courses offered when necessary.
Continuing Education Fund
This course has been included in the list of reimbursable courses under the Continuing Education Fund. This course is recognised under the Qualifications Framework (QF Level 4).
