MPhil Stream in Biomedical Sciences

The MPhil Stream is a research-oriented program that requires students to delve deeply into the fields of knowledge relevant to their project topics.

Qualifications for Admission

To be eligible for admission, applicants must hold a bachelor's degree with honors (preferably Second Upper Honours or above) in a field related to biomedical or life sciences. Additionally, they must fulfill the English Language Proficiency Requirement as stipulated by the Graduate School.

Program Structure

The program typically takes two years to complete for full-time students. The coursework requirements are as follows:

• First year:
  • Students must take a minimum of 12 units, including:
    • Four compulsory courses (8 units):
      • SBMS6001: Advances in Biomedical Sciences (3 units)
      • SBMS6002: Advances in Biomedical Techniques and Skills (3 units)
      • MEDP6002: Biostatistics (MED) (1 unit)
      • MEDP6003: Biostatistics (MED) (1 unit)
    • Two elective courses (4 units) from the following options:
      • SBMS6003: Introduction to Developmental and Regenerative Biology (2 units)
      • SBMS6004: Neural, Vascular, and Metabolic Biology (2 units)
      • SBMS6005: Cancer Biology and Experimental Therapeutics (2 units)
      • MEDP6001: Molecular Medicine (3 units)
    • Other required courses:
      • SBMS8006: Thesis Research (12 units)
      • SBMS6100: Seminar (2 units)
• Second year:
  • Students must take:
    • SBMS8006: Thesis Research (12 units)
    • SBMS6100: Seminar (2 units)

Total Units

The total number of units required for the program is 40.

Thesis Requirement

Each MPhil student must submit a thesis based on their research for examination and pass an oral defense of the thesis for graduation.

Tuition Fees

The tuition fee for the MPhil program (full-time) is HK$42,100 per annum.
