Introduction to the Master of Divinity (MDiv) Program

The Master of Divinity (MDiv) program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in theology, preparing them for a career in ministry or further academic pursuits. The program is offered in both full-time and part-time modes, with a normative study period of 2-3 years for full-time students and 4-5 years for part-time students.

Study Mode and Normative Study Period

• Full-time: 2-3 years
• Part-time: 4-5 years

Minimum Units Required

• Students admitted in or after: 94 units
• Students admitted in or before: 97 units
• Students admitted in or before: 99 units

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the MDiv program, applicants must:

1. Present letters of recommendation from an official of their churches and from an undergraduate/postgraduate teacher or the department of university concerned.
2. Submit a letter of purpose of study (around 1,000 words).
3. Have been baptized for at least two years prior to admission.

Area 1: Biblical Studies

• Biblical Language (Any 2 courses from THEO5301, 5302, 5303, 5304): 6 units
• Biblical Studies (THEO5311 or THEO5919, THEO5312 or THEO5910 and any 2 courses from RELS5131, 5132, 5133, 5134, 5135, THEO5210, 5211, 5212, 5213, 5214, 5215, 5313, 5314, 5315, 5316, 5317, 5318, 5910, 5911, 5912, 5913, 5919, 5950, 5951): 6 units
• Total Units: 18

Area 2: History of Christianity

• THEO5271, 5272, 5321, 5322 / 5323: 12 units
• Total Units: 12

Area 3: Theology

• THEO5335, 5336 and any 2 courses from THEO5224, 5225, 5226, 5331, 5920, 5921, 5922, 5930, 5952, 5953: 12 units
• Total Units: 12

Area 4: Pastoral Studies

• At least 3 courses from THEO5244, 5245, 5341, 5342, 5343, 5344, 5345, 5346, 5941, 5942, 5943, 5944, 5945, 5946, 5947, 5948, 5956, 5957, 6941, 6942: 9 units
• Total Units: 9

Area 5: Christianity and Society

• Mission (At least 1 course from THEO5141, 5142, 5352, 5924, 5931)
• Ethics (At least 1 course from RELS5273, THEO5354, 5843)
• Christian Education (THEO5351, 5513, 5551, 5846, 5852, 5853, 5854, 5855, 5960, 5961)
• Asian Studies (RELS5118, 5121, 5123, 5125, 5129, 5131, 5144, 5151, THEO5322, 5323, 5913, 5922, 5923, 5925, 5926, 5928, 5958, 5959): 12 units
• Total Units: 12

Area 6: Faculty Student Seminar

• THEO5005, 5006, 5007, 5008: 12 units

Elective Courses

• First to Third Years of Attendance: Any 8 units of courses listed in the course lists above (THEO/RELS Religious courses) other than the 89 units of required courses, or other courses (THEO/RELS Religious Studies courses) approved by the Head of Graduate Division or Director of Divinity School of Chung Chi College: 8 units
• Total Units: 8

Remarks

• Studied before admission is acceptable.
• Faculty Student Seminar can only be taken by students in the final year and the year before.
• Field Education is not an elective; it must be taken during term time or summer holidays. First year students can take this course only during or after their first summer holiday.

Procedure of Studying

Students should study the basic courses in Area 1 to 3, then study the more advanced Area 4 to 6. Intro. to NT/OT, Biblical Language, and Systematic Theology I & II should be taken in the first year.

Graduation Requirements

1. Students must fulfil the Term Assessment Requirement of the Graduate School.
2. IT Proficiency Test (Applicable to students admitted in and before).
3. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
