Program Overview


Introduction to the Bachelor of Arts in Theology (BA) Program

The Bachelor of Arts in Theology (BA) program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in theology, including basic theological studies, general education, and languages. Students can also opt for minor subjects. The program typically takes at least four years to complete on a full-time basis.


Admission Requirement

To be eligible for the program, an applicant must have passed The Chinese University of Hong Kong matriculation or have obtained exemption from it.


Major Programme Requirement

The major program requires students to complete a minimum of 70 units of courses, which include:


  • Faculty Package: Any 3 courses from a list of specified courses, totaling 9 units.
  • Required Courses: A set of 10 courses, including CURE1122, PHIL1110, and various THEO courses, totaling 28 units.
  • Elective Courses:
    • One course from each of Theological Studies Areas 2, 4, and 5, totaling 9 units.
    • At least two courses at the 2000 or above level from each of Theological Studies Areas 1 and 3, totaling 12 units.
    • 12 units of elective courses chosen from all THEO courses (except those taken in Required Courses and Elective courses above) and all CURE courses (except those listed in Cultural Studies Area).

Explanatory Notes

  1. Students in their final year of attendance are allowed to take THEO and CURE courses at the 5000 or above level, subject to the approval of the Director of Divinity School of Chung Chi College and the Chairman of the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies.
  2. THEO and CURE courses at the 2000 and above level will be included in the calculation of the Major GPA for honors classification.

Recommended Course Pattern

The recommended course pattern is outlined for each year of attendance, detailing the specific courses and units to be completed in each term.


First Year of Attendance

  • 1st term: Faculty Package (3 units), Major Required (THEO1211, 3 units), Major Elective (1 course, 3 units).
  • 2nd term: Faculty Package (3 units), Major Required (THEO1212, 3 units), Major Elective (1 course, 3 units).

Second Year of Attendance

  • 1st term: Faculty Package (3 units), Major Required (1 course from CURE1122, PHIL1110, THEO2235, and 2236, 3 units), Major Elective (1 course, 3 units).
  • 2nd term: Major Required (THEO3221 and 1 course from CURE1122, PHIL1110, THEO2235, and 2236, 6 units), Major Elective (1 course, 3 units).

Third Year of Attendance

  • 1st term: Major Required (THEO2241 and 1 course from CURE1122, PHIL1110, THEO2235, and 2236, 6 units), Major Elective (1 course, 3 units).
  • 2nd term: Major Required (1 course from CURE1122, PHIL1110, THEO2235, and 2236, 3 units), Major Elective (1 course, 3 units).

Fourth Year of Attendance

  • 1st term: Major Required (THEO4241, 2 units), Major Elective (3 courses, 9 units).
  • 2nd term: Major Required (THEO4242, 2 units), Major Elective (2 courses, 6 units).

Minor Programme Requirement

The Minor Programme in Theology requires students to complete a minimum of 18 units of courses, including 6 THEO courses with at least 1 course at the 2000 or above level and another 2 courses at the 3000 or above level.
