Program Overview
French and Politics Program
Overview
The French and Politics program at Queen Mary University of London is a four-year degree that combines two complementary areas of interest. Students will develop high-level French language skills and gain insight into the workings of today's increasingly globalized world. The program is jointly taught by the School of the Arts and the School of Politics and International Relations.
Structure
The program is divided into four years, with the third year spent studying or working in a French-speaking country. The structure of the program is as follows:
- Year 1: Compulsory modules include French language, Culture and Language, and Thinking Politically. Students will also take one of the following module combinations: Political Analysis, Politics in Action and Background to British Politics, or Politics in Action and Global Histories.
- Year 2: Compulsory modules include French II and Modern Political Thought 1. Students will also choose from a range of modules, including Postcolonial Francospheres, British Politics, and International Relations Theory.
- Year 3: Year abroad, with options to attend university, participate in a work placement, or teach English as a foreign language assistant.
- Year 4: Compulsory module includes French III. Students will also choose from a range of modules, including Language and Society in the French-speaking World, Afropean Identities, and American Politics.
Teaching and Learning
Students will receive approximately 16 hours of weekly contact time, in the form of lectures, seminar group sessions, and language classes. For every hour spent in class, students will complete a further two to three hours of independent study. Assessment typically includes a combination of written exams and coursework, final-year dissertations, independent projects, and creative journals.
