Program Overview

Program Overview

The Biomedical Sciences program at Queen Mary University of London is designed to provide students with a hands-on approach to learning, preparing them for a career in medicine and dentistry. The program is co-taught between the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences and Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Program Structure

One of the core modules in the program is 'Case-based Learning', which is designed to prepare students for the active, hands-on learning style emphasized in many UK medical schools. This approach, called problem-based learning, encourages students to work both independently and in teams to analyze real clinical case histories. The assessment sessions will also prepare students for medical school-style examinations.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module, students will have broadened their basic human bioscience knowledge and will be familiar with a range of clinically important diseases and conditions caused by dysfunctional physiological, anatomical, developmental, metabolic, molecular biological, and genetic processes.

Teaching Style

The program integrates problem-based learning alongside traditional lectures and seminars, providing students with the opportunity to form strong relationships, learn how to communicate effectively in a group, and work in a team to tackle problems. These skills will be invaluable in any career, especially one in medicine.

Research Areas

The program covers a range of research areas, including:

  • Biological and biomedical sciences
  • Medicine and dentistry
  • Humanities and social sciences
  • Science and engineering

Program Benefits

The program provides students with a unique learning experience, preparing them for a career in medicine and dentistry. The hands-on approach to learning, combined with traditional lectures and seminars, provides students with a comprehensive understanding of biomedical sciences and the skills necessary to succeed in their chosen career.
