Program Overview


Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences

The Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences is a full-time, one-year programme offering highly flexible and personalised hands-on research training in a multidisciplinary environment. You will spend two-thirds of the programme working in the laboratories of leading research centres, under the supervision of internationally renowned researchers in fields such as genomics, bioengineering, photonics, chemistry, nanotechnology, high-energy physics, and biomedicine, among others.

This program is aimed at candidates who intend to pursue a research career in biomedical science, chemistry, physics, or nanotechnology, with the specific focus of preparing students to undertake a PhD in one of these disciplines. The program is open to candidates who hold a degree in health sciences, engineering, computer sciences, or degrees in basic scientific disciplines (chemistry, physics, biology, or mathematics).

Academic Information and Syllabus

The master's degree is obtained by passing a minimum of 60 ECTS distributed as follows:


  • 20 ECTS credits - Compulsory
  • 30 ECTS credits - Internships (on BIST Community centres and MELIS-UPF)
  • 10 ECTS credits - Master’s degree final project

The programme of the Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences is based on experiential learning through working on selected research projects under the supervision of group leaders from a large variety of research areas.


Statistics & Data Analysis (SDA)

  • Workload: 125 hrs.
  • Term: 1st
  • This subject focuses on statistical methods to analyse research data in experimental sciences.

Responsible Research and Science Communication (RRSC)

  • ECTS: 5
  • Workload: 125 hrs.
  • Term: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
  • The course is a developmental training programme which focuses on enhancing the effectiveness of future researchers.

Seminars in Advanced Research (SAR)

  • Total credits: 5 ECTS
  • Workload: 125 hrs.
  • Term: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
  • This course provides an introduction to multidisciplinary research in experimental sciences.

Advanced Techniques in Experimental Sciences (ATES, Winter School)

  • ECTS: 5
  • Workload: 125 hrs.
  • Term: 1st and 2nd
  • This course is organized as an intensive winter school combining theoretical courses and hands-on training in microscopy, nanoscopy, and imaging analysis.

Research Project (Major Project)

  • ECTS: 20
  • Workload: 500 hrs.
  • Term: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
  • Hands-on, intensive training-through-research.

Interdisciplinary Research Training (Minor Project)

  • ECTS: 10
  • Workload: 250 hrs.

  • The aim of this subject is to provide students with complementary training in a different research discipline.

Master’s Final Project

  • ECTS: 10
  • Contact Hours: 250

  • The student will write a research manuscript in the form of a scientific paper, based on the original results obtained by the student during their research training.
