Program Overview
Introduction to the Degree in Biomedical Sciences
The Degree in Biomedical Sciences represents a multidisciplinary approach that integrates various scientific disciplines, aiming to unravel the complexities of the human body and address urgent health challenges. The academic relevance of this title is underscored by the growing demand for professionals capable of developing their work in a complex environment, focused on population health, and contributing to advances in biomedical research.
Objectives and Competencies
- Forming students in the understanding of the fundamental principles of biomedical sciences: The study plan of Biomedical Sciences prioritizes the acquisition and integration of fundamental knowledge in basic sciences, biochemistry, genetics, and human biology. Subjects such as Basic Sciences II, Biochemistry I-III, Cellular Biology I, Neurophysiology, Physiology of Systems, and Basic Genetics are structured to ensure that the student acquires a solid theoretical base.
- Enabling the student with the knowledge of instrumental techniques, data analysis, and computational tools to perform quality biomedical research: Subjects like Biomedical Research, Foundations of Computational Biology, and Systems Biology provide practical experience in research methodologies, computational tools, and systems thinking. The aim is to equip the student with the ability to critically analyze data, design experiments, and contribute to innovative research in the biomedical field.
- Enabling the student in the generic competencies necessary to exercise as a professional in biomedical sciences, including critical thinking, professional practice, and ethical responsibility: All subjects foster the development of transversal competencies necessary for professional practice. Subjects like Bioethics, Training Plan for Professional Integration, and Professionalizing Practices address the ethical considerations inherent in biomedical research and prepare the student for perfect integration into the labor market.
- Preparing the student to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the degree in the professional biomedical context: The inclusion of practical components in each subject, along with professionalizing practices and final degree projects, aims to offer the scenario to apply the knowledge, skills, and competencies of the degree in the professional world.
Study Plan
The study plan of the Degree in Biomedical Sciences is designed to provide a comprehensive education, including theoretical and practical aspects of biomedical sciences. It covers a wide range of subjects, from basic sciences to specialized courses in biomedical research and its applications.

Stays Abroad
The Faculty encourages students to take academic or research stays abroad. The study plan provides for a trimester (second trimester of the fourth year during the Tutored Practices) for those who opt for a mobility program in other universities. The activities of the exchange programs will have recognition in ECTS credits.
In addition, the Faculty promotes research stays during the summer months. Almost all students who have taken the previous degree in Human Biology at the UPF have done research stays of this type, mostly abroad.
Professional Outings
The Degree in Biomedical Sciences aims to train graduates with high professional competence and ethical responsibility that facilitates their integration into the professional world. The extensive practical training endows graduates with the practical skills to apply theoretical knowledge in the real world.
In line with the learning outcomes, the study plan guarantees a holistic training. Graduates are not only equipped with a deep understanding of biomedical sciences, but they also possess the skills and competencies necessary for success in careers oriented towards research and in professional environments related to their training, such as clinical analysis, clinical trials and medical advice, drugs and quality control, genetic advice, data analysis, project offices and patents, biological recycling, alternative energies, scientific communication and dissemination, scientific illustration, teaching, demography and public health. Graduates are prepared to develop their professional activity in the dynamic and changing field of Biomedical Sciences with confidence and competence.
It is noteworthy that our graduates have a labor occupation of 97% two years after finishing the degree.
Practices in Companies and Institutions
The objective of the Professionalizing Practices (16 ECTS; Fourth Year) is for the student to carry out a research task or an advanced practice with the purpose of applying and complementing the knowledge acquired during academic training. In addition, they aim to bring the student closer to the reality of one of the possible professional fields in which a graduate can exercise their activity, as well as develop competencies that favor their incorporation into the labor market.
They can be carried out in any research center, university, company, or hospital of recognized national or international solvency.
