Introduction to the University Program

The University Pompeu Fabra offers a comprehensive program in Law, designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the structure and functions of legal systems and their norms. Presentation

The Law program at the University Pompeu Fabra is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in law, enabling them to detect and analyze social conflicts and their means of composition. Students will develop the ability to argue and negotiate effectively through critical legal reasoning, enhance their initiative and leadership skills, and acquire fluency in the technical use of foreign languages.

The program objectives include providing a formation that allows students to understand the structure and functions of legal systems and their norms, assimilate basic normative contents, and apply legal argumentation and interpretation techniques.

Graduates in Law from the University Pompeu Fabra acquire the following competencies:

Study Plan

The study plan includes basic subjects (60 credits), compulsory subjects (140 credits), and elective subjects (34 credits), as well as the possibility of taking a professional practicum (8 credits). The plan concludes with the preparation of a final degree project (6 credits) to accredit the mastery of concepts and knowledge in one or more branches of law and the essential skills of a lawyer.

Practices are external and elective, providing 8 credits out of the 34 credits allocated for elective subjects.


Stays Abroad

Stays abroad are elective and take place in the third and fourth years. The Faculty of Law promotes student mobility through exchange programs with universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, or France.

Characteristics

The study plan includes basic, compulsory, and elective subjects, as well as the possibility of taking a professional practicum. The plan concludes with the preparation of a final degree project. Students who access the Law degree in the 2023/24 academic year and later must take a minimum of 9 ECTS credits in English. Students who accessed the degree in previous academic years must take 10 credits in English, in addition to the subject Introduction to Common Law.


The teaching methodology combines magisterial classes and seminars. Magisterial classes aim to transmit critical knowledge and fix basic concepts, while seminars are held in small groups and promote active participation and the ability to solve problems and exercise the skills typical of lawyers.


The basic subjects are taught at the beginning to acquire a transversal formation in social sciences that enriches the ability to understand legal phenomena. The compulsory subjects constitute the essential core for any professional outlet in the field of law and to pass, after additional training, the access tests to the legal profession or competitions for access to other legal professions.


The study plan also allows for some specialization through the seven elective itineraries offered.


Additionally, simultaneous study programs are offered, such as with the degrees in Political Science and Administration and Labor Relations.
