Program Overview


Introduction to the Barcelona Program for Interdisciplinary Studies (BaPIS)

The Barcelona Program for Interdisciplinary Studies (BaPIS) is a special program open to all international students and students of the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). The program aims to provide a stable and complementary offer to the regular courses of the UPF, enriching the academic offer by promoting transdisciplinarity and collaboration between areas of knowledge.


Article 1: Definition and Objectives

1.1 Definition

The BaPIS program is designed to provide a new academic offer of a transversal, interdisciplinary, and global perspective, where UPF students and international students can come together.


1.2 Objectives

The objectives of the program are:


  • To provide the UPF with a new academic offer that is transversal, interdisciplinary, and has a global perspective.
  • To allow UPF students to share specific and focused courses as a strategy for internationalization at home and as part of the Free Choice Transversal Training (FTLE) offer.
  • To give students the opportunity to take innovative courses that stimulate critical and creative thinking, both in the proposed contents and in the teaching methodologies.
  • To work with students to give them analysis criteria that allow them to achieve a plural vision that helps them understand the different scientific, economic, social, and cultural realities in a global framework, as well as the relationships established between disciplines.

Article 2: Academic Structure

2.1 Academic Direction

The academic direction of the BaPIS program will be responsible for preparing the offer, coordinating and deploying the courses, as well as supervising the teaching task of the professors and the follow-up of the students.


2.2 Approval of the Academic Offer

The approval of the academic offer and the academic follow-up of the BaPIS program corresponds to the Commission of the Program for Foreign Studies, integrated by the deans, as regulated by the Agreement of the Government Council of April 8, 2003.


Article 3: Admission Requirements

3.1 Requirements for International Students

International students must be enrolled in a university or institution of higher education accredited in a course after the first academic year and have an academic record with a grade point average (GPA or equivalent) of 3.0 or higher.


3.2 Requirements for UPF Students

UPF students can only enroll in BaPIS courses if they are enrolled in a course of their plan that allows them to take electives or when they are taking a minor.


3.3 Language Requirements

It is highly recommended that students who want to take a course taught in a language other than their native language have at least a B2 level or equivalent in the respective language.


Article 4: Calendar

4.1 Course Duration

The duration of the BaPIS courses is approximately 12 weeks, equivalent to 45 hours of face-to-face classes, combined with other types of teaching.


4.2 Course Structure

The courses of the BaPIS program are structured by trimesters, following the academic calendar of the UPF.


Article 5: Establishment of the Academic Offer

5.1 Approval of the Academic Offer

The offer of the BaPIS program and its calendar will be approved with a minimum of 12 weeks before the start of the course.


5.2 Selection of Courses

The selection of courses will be made from the proposals presented by the teaching staff in a public call addressed to all the teaching and research staff of the UPF.


Article 6: Minimum Number of Students

6.1 Minimum Number of Students per Class

The minimum number of students per class in content courses is set at 10 students enrolled.


6.2 Maximum Number of Students per Class

The maximum number of students per class in content courses is set at 35 students.


Article 7: Enrollment

7.1 Pre-Enrollment Period

A pre-enrollment period will be opened in which universities or foreign institutions with which an agreement has been signed must provide a provisional list with the data of the students and the detail of the courses in which they want to enroll.


Article 8: Evaluation

8.1 Evaluation of Knowledge

The evaluation of the knowledge acquired in the BaPIS will be done in a single call.


8.2 Publication of Qualifications

The qualifications will be published on the Campus Global within a maximum period of seven natural days after the final exams have been taken.


Article 9: Teaching Staff

9.1 Teaching Staff

The teaching staff of the BaPIS is from the UPF, and exceptionally, external teaching staff may collaborate.


9.2 Remuneration

The remuneration for the teaching of BaPIS courses will be established through an instruction from the Management.


Article 10: Classroom Rules

10.1 Attendance

Attendance in class is mandatory and will be supervised daily by the professor or teacher.


10.2 Academic Honesty and Student Conduct

Students participating in the program must participate actively in class, contribute to the discussions, study, and complete the assigned work.


10.3 Specific Norms for Activities Outside the Campus

Students of the BaPIS must participate in visits to institutions and museums, guided tours, and other activities related to the subject. These activities are part of the academic program and are designed to form part of the learning and evaluation process. Students must consider these activities as classes outside the classroom for all purposes, and during the course of these activities, the same behavior and rules that apply in the classroom will be expected and applied.
