Program Overview

The Doctoral Program in Communication is regulated by a series of internal and external regulations.

Normativa de tesis doctorals

Format and Cover

The editing criteria and format are mandatory for all UPF theses. The criteria and templates, as well as the instructions for requesting the cover from La Factoria, must be followed.


Extension of the Doctoral Thesis

According to Article 4 of the Normativa acadèmica de dipòsit i defensa de tesis doctorals del Departament de Comunicació, the theses presented to the Department of Communication must have the following extension:


  • Unitary Theses: a recommended extension of 90,000 words and always superior to 75,000, without counting the annexes.
  • Thesis by Compendium of Publications: according to the new regulations, they must include at least two main sections: the research report and the compendium of publications resulting from the research. The research report presents the research in a global manner and explains the investigative coherence of the same. It is recommended that it contain at least the following sections: Introduction / Theoretical Framework / Methodology / Results / Conclusions, with an approximate extension of 20,000 words. The compendium, for its part, presents the publications derived from the research. For each item that forms part of the compendium, the complete reference data (including DOI, ISSN or ISBN numbers, as the case may be) and the publications themselves must be provided.
  • Thesis for Applied Research Project: the written report will have a recommended extension of 40,000 words (without counting the annexes) and must foresee the following sections in a recommended manner: Theoretical Framework / Objectives / Methodology / Results / Conclusions / Bibliography / Report from the collaborating institution (in case there is one). The production of thesis content (graphic, audiovisual, or interactive material) will be delivered at the time of deposit on a portable memory. This material will be treated as evaluable content of the report (not as an annex) and must be correctly referenced in the report.

Language of Elaboration of the Thesis

In case the language of the doctoral thesis is different from Catalan, Spanish, or English, it must be requested from the Comissió Acadèmica de Doctorat (CAD) to be able to do it in another language habitual for scientific communication in its field of knowledge.


Warning about Plagiarism

The Department of Communication will not tolerate cases of plagiarism or copying, nor active or passive collaboration with this type of fraudulent practices in the work done by students. The sanction for this type of practice will consist of opening a file that may conclude with the non-obtention of the doctoral degree.


Plagiarism is considered the reproduction of phrases or paragraphs of texts from other authors without citing the original source from which they come, whether it is an Internet page, a book, a magazine, or work by other colleagues.
